Huck’s pretty cute and the ladies love him. And now, just 14 days shy of his second birthday, he's beginning to love the ladies. Today he had a playdate with his girlfriend Gracie, received a postcard from his first love Abbie, got to see Tia Rosie unexpectedly, played with Betty and Amanda in the nursery and then was given a homemade valentine from a girl at our church that says “DEARE HUCK, I LOVE YOU THE END.” All these things made him very coy, shy and secretly happy.
But what really got me was when a pretty six year old girl came up to us at the pizza place this evening and told me how cute he was. I didn't think he was paying attention to our conversation, but hours later before bed tonight Huck confided in Troy and said this with a very sly look on his face: "Excuse me, Daddy. Girl said, "He’s cute.'”

These days we’re waiting. We’re waiting for Huck's birthday, and in the meantime we’re planning and preparing for that momentous occasion and saying lots of “almost two.” We’re waiting for the temperature to get a little higher so we can return to our beloved playgrounds and swing and climb and run. We’re waiting for Kadin to learn to walk so that Huck stops knocking him down. We’re waiting for Daddy to get back to normal and have his fun energy back. We're waiting for Huck's appetite to return. We’re waiting for our bodies to stop catching colds. We’re waiting for news on our movie CHALK. We’re waiting for news on our play UNCLE. We're waiting for Abbie to come back and visit us someday. We're waiting for Huck's hair to grow back ever since Mommy gave it a very unprofessional trim the other day. We feel a little stuck, a little stir crazy.
So while we wait we spend afternoons painting with Kadin and taking baths and reading hundreds of books and building humble forts and talking to Na-Na and Aunt Tina and Aunt Jeni and Shannon on the computer with our web cams and practicing riding our new tricycle up and down the hall and watching home movies and throwing balls and coloring and taking pictures and saying our ABCs. And one of these days we won’t be waiting as much and we’ll look back and say, “Where did the time go?”

Pappy T is recovering nicely and very quietly from his tonsillectomy. He doesn't talk much and he snaps sweetly when he needs me, which isn't very often because he's a very easy patient. He does, however, prefer my jello over his own.
Huck is recovering slowly and not so quietly from the tummy bug he caught two nights before Troy's surgery. He's yells and screams when he needs me, which is almost constantly. And sometimes he's a little scared of his Mute Daddy.
Mommy is tired.

One month from today and we have a real live two year old on our hands. One of my favorite authors Anne Lamott once referred to some two year old she knew as being pretty well behaved, but then she said that’s like calling someone a good Nazi. Sure, they’re pretty nice for a Nazi, but they ARE a Nazi after all.
Huck has a lot of goodbyes this month. Mommy’s Milk officially went into retirement a few days ago and is now living in the Bahamas, sitting under a shady palm tree drinking a vodka tonic. The only real clue that Huck’s suffering a mild personality disorder is that he’s very attached to my belly button and needs to play with it many times a day. (And he recently named a Mardi Gras necklace “Mommy’s Milk,” but I’m sure that’s normal.) I’ll wait till next month to wean him from my belly button.
Secondly we’re all about to say goodbye to Daddy’s tonsils. This Friday Pappy T is having a tonsillectomy. We’re not going to miss those ornery tonsils so much, but we are going to miss hearing his voice.
And lastly, in five days our beloved Abbie is leaving us and moving to Denver. On our way up to visit her the other day Huck said this to a stranger in the elevator: “Go to Abbie’s apartment … Go see Abbie … Abbie loves you.”
She’ll always be his first love.

Today during the Arctic blast that has taken over New York City our sweet friends Shamie and Jacob came to play with us. As Huck will tell you, he is almost two and Jacob is THREE! And beds are very fun to jump upon.
