huck updates

The other day Huck rolled over from his tummy to his back three times in a row! Unfortunately, I was the only witness and he won't do it on camera or for anyone else, thus making me look like a liar. But really: I would make up something more fantastic than that. Like the other day Huck climbed on top of Max and went for a ride through the neighborhood. Something like that.

Speaking of Max, Huck finally discovered him! His eyes and mouth got very big as he realized there was a furry creature licking him. Max then got very nervous and began licking me insanely. I had to calm them both down. A few hours later Max came up to me with one of his legs held up as if it was very hurt. I got down on the floor next to him and pet him and kissed him as I tried to get him to lie down so I could look at his injury. He was in so much pain that he struggled to even lie down. I was starting to get worried when all of a sudden he heard a noise and ran energetically out of the bedroom. I was fooled yet again by Lame Puppy Syndrome, one of Max's sneaky ways to get attention. Here's a picture that has nothing to do with Max and his deception:

Huck got a "Baby Mozart" DVD from his Grandmama Judy and has been enjoying it in little bits and pieces. The whole 30 minutes is too much excitement for him, but he manages about five minutes at a time. He makes high pitched squeaks and screams while he watches it, which is pretty entertaining for us. Here he is watching his movie:

And lastly, Huck has taken to kissing my face with his big wide open mouth as he giggles and snorts hysterically. Seriously, where did he come from? He's like a weird little alien.

kansas, oh, kansas

We survived our two week Kansas vacation. Huck met over 60 people and is officially over stimulated. He looks at me with tired eyes and begs me to make life boring again. Bless his three-and-a-half month old heart!

Here are interesting tidbits from our travels with Huck:

He hates riding in cars more than anything in the whole world. I guess that's what happens to a born New Yorker. Unfortunately, Troy quickly figured out that if he sings Phil Collins' song "Sussudio" in a loud falsetto voice he can calm Huck's fussies while in the car. You have to ask yourself: which is worse?

Kansans think the sight of Troy carrying Huck around in the sling is darling and precious and the cutest thing ever, versus New York people who often give Troy mean looks as if he's hurting the baby.

Huck has fantastic aunts. We all know Huck has fantastic grandparents. That goes without saying. But I have to take a moment to say that Aunt Tina and Aunt Lori and Aunt Jeni are incredible aunts that love their little nephew very much. He is one lucky little kid!!!

On Father's Day our very talented son learned to roll his tongue and make a sort of crazed telephone ring type sound. This is probably due to the fact that I, his mother, make this sound to him almost non-stop. In fact, I sometimes find myself accidentally doing this to adults in an attempt to please them, forgetting that it is really only pleasing to a little baby.

Huck LOVES swimming in indoor heated swimming pools. I wish I had taken a picture of him in the Salina, Kansas YMCA pool. He was so happy and awkward all at once. The image is still haunting Aunt Jeni.

Traveling with a baby is harder than not traveling with a baby. But all in all he did quite well. He even slept all through the night a few times. But seriously, we're not going to travel again until he's 16.

dear lord

Tomorrow Huck rides on his first airplane all the way to Kansas. It's his first trip ever! You know what that means. It's his parents' first trip ever with a baby. It leaves us asking the questions: Are we going to be that horrible family with the crying baby on the entire three hour flight? Are any of us going to get sleep for the next two weeks? Are we crazy to take a three month old on a trip like this and should we just leave him with a babysitter here in New York?

Just kidding, family. We're bringing Huck with us. Wish us luck!!!

There are three top questions we get asked now that we have a little baby. The first one is: How old is he? (Although many strangers ask, How old is she?) Once his age is established the response is always a gasp followed by, “He’s so big!” Which is true. He is a very big 12 week old. The second question is: How does he sleep at night? Our standard answer to that one is that he is a very, very good night sleeper, usually only waking up once around 4:00. However, the past few nights he has woken up many more times and so we are considering returning him to the hospital and asking for a refund. The third question is: When are you going to have another one?

Now then. We just spent nine little months of excitement and anxiety and happiness and discomfort preparing for our lives to be completely changed by the arrival of Mr. Huck William. And now we’ve spent 12 very short weeks feeding him, changing his diapers, trying to get him to sleep and taking his picture every five seconds. We are approaching the anniversary of the day he was made in Austin, Texas. He’s only been in existence one year now! This is still pretty brand new stuff for the ol’ Schremmers. Why oh why oh why would anyone think that there is any part of us even considering having another baby? So I smile and give a sarcastic chuckle and say, “Oh, I think one is plenty!” And because Huck is so cute and new and fun, people yell at me and say we HAVE to have another one. Or two. Huck needs a playmate. Huck needs a brother or a sister. Huck needs both a brother and a sister. We should go and get started right this minute.

We just learned that New York City is the only-child capital of the country, probably because it’s extra expensive here and finding an apartment to fit more than one child is tricky. I like the idea of Huck growing up with lots of friends and cousins and two parents that love him like crazy. It took us a long time to feel ready for this new human being. Can you imagine how long it would take us to decide to have a second child? So there’s the answer: we’re going to wait until we’re 50. We might be ready by then.
