very little willpower

September 28, 2004, 9:23 pm

Troy and I always said if we ever got pregnant we would not find out what the gender was until the moment it was born, as we always loved it when family and friends did that. So when we got pregnant for real we didn't even question this. Until a few days ago. Troy brought it up and I quickly agreed ... we were dying to know what the creature was!

So today at our fancy-dancy ultrasound in which all the body parts (ALL the body parts) were looked at intensely to make sure everything looked right (and apparently everything looks perfect so far) we decided to make this baby a little less mysterious. We're having a boy! The doctor zoomed in on his "wee-wee" (her technical term) and sort of complimented it. She also said he was very, very active. Which means we're having an Active Boy. Yikes.

I'm hoping he has Troy's sweet temperament, but I think his latest picture kind of looks like me.

"i'm a boy!"

name game... by troy (pappy t)

September 24, 2004, 9:21 pm

Names.
We all have them. Some of us love our names. Some of us change our names. Some of us are defensive about our names.
And here's me and Jonny, tryin' to come up with a name for the creature that grows below. We sure hope to get it right.
Naming a human being is kind of a big deal.

But how much does a person's name shape that person's life? Well, maybe we can find out right here on our blog! So, kind blog-reader, give us some feedback!

How has your name affected you?

If you have a common name - have you had to work extra hard to stand out in a crowd? Did you resent other kids who had your name? Did you like having a bond with other folks named your name? What if they spelled it differently than you?

If you have an uncommon name - do you feel weird? Did you change your name? Are you mad at your parents? Do you feel original? Do you hate it when people make you repeat your name over again? Do people make fun of you more than other people?

If you go by your middle name- why? Is your first name not good enough for ya?

Please let us know!

fluttering onion

September 22, 2004, 4:57 pm

I think I have begun to feel the faintest of flutterings from the fletus. It feels like everything everyone has ever described to me: like you're hungry but you're not, like you're full but you're not, like a small goldfish is swimming through your belly but it's not. All those things have happened to me at least once a day for the past few days. And according to some book that always describes the size in terms of food, it is now the size of a large onion. Seems like just yesterday it was the size of a lime.

Oh, how quickly they grow!

tiny baby

September 18, 2004, 9:42 pm

I am right now visiting Jeni, Nathan, Noah and Lily in Illinois, having a wonderful time as always. Noah is full of three year old energy and not only have we played circus and "basketball" and strange games with little cars and farm animals, but he's told me he loves me at least 100 times and just moments ago said I was his best friend. Noah is good for the self esteem. Lily is a month old and very beautiful and tiny and fragile and delicate (although normal for her age -- I'm just not used to a newborn). Tonight while holding her I tried to imagine that it was a few months from now and it was our baby ... It didn't work. Jeni assured me that she also was unable to picture Noah back when she was preparing to be a mom for the first time, and I can tell you that Noah is VERY REAL.

During this visit I keep accidentally appearing in unexpected places, and one of the times was when I had secretly moved from the family room into the living room while holding Lily, and Jeni didn't know it. She was in the kitchen and turned suddenly to find me in my new spot. She let out a little Linda Hottman gasp and screamed, "Oh, God! I thought I saw a premonition!" So apparently she is having no trouble picturing me with a little baby.

bump

September 13, 2004, 5:33 pm

Per Sonnet's request, there is now a picture of me on the Photos page trying to look natural while showing off my little bump of a baby. I tell you, it's hard not to look awkward in such a situation. So much pressure!

shopping spree

September 12, 2004, 9:30 am

Yesterday our friends Heather and Aaron and baby Callie generously spent the day with us at a huge store helping us register for every single baby gift we could ever hope for. Troy and I were very nervous about this adventure, although excited to spend the day with the Myricks and be driven around the suburbs and eat dinner at Pizzaria Uno. We just didn't think we had the talent necessary to make decisions like what kind of baby bed to get or what receiving blankets to choose. We didn't know what "receiving blanket" meant until yesterday.

But we got to the store and something magical happened. We were given a gun, which the store actually told us not to call a gun but rather a scanner, and we were sent off to shoot at bar codes of whatever we wanted. Suddenly we had opinions about things we didn't know existed! We cared about colors! Monitors! Baby bags! I was shooting things ... scanning things ... left and right. Heather and Aaron were our wise teachers, giving us excellent advice on what worked or didn't work for them. Occasionally Heather would exclaim: "I'm so jealous you're getting that! You're so lucky!" making me feel fancy. It was one of the most fun days we ever had, until Troy suddenly got very tired and hungry and began rushing me through the onesies department. (If you don't know what that means, don't worry about it. If you ever get pregnant you will suddenly understand.) Somehow we were at that store for three and a half hours. I've never spent that much time in a store in my whole life.

(I'm not going to tell you the name of the store because we are not quite ready to be showered with gifts yet, what with our tiny apartment that can barely fit me in it anymore.)

So, we are officially registered at a secret place. Thanks, Myricks!!

it's a girl!

September 7, 2004, 8:54 pm

This last weekend we had the pleasure of spending a day with my cousin Heather, her husband Elliott and their three year old son Bryce and four month old son Carter, who is the perfect baby. We decided we want one just like him. My dad, however, says that we will get a bad one to punish me for what a bad baby I was, but my Aunt Dottie says no one gets the baby they deserve and so we will get a good one. I'm kind of offended by both of their comments.

Anyway, during our visit Bryce asked me if I had a baby inside my tummy. I smiled and said yes, and with a serious look on his beautiful face he pressed his hand very firmly upon my bosom and predicted it was a girl. A few hours later they were leaving and Bryce was instructed to say goodbye to the baby inside my tummy. "My TUMMY," I sort of reiterated. I quickly braced myself, knowing the attention I was about to receive, and he again put his hand onto my bosom and said goodbye to the baby. I think Bryce and I are dating now.

troy's new nickname

September 5, 2004, 11:36 am

On our way to Virginia yesterday, where we are having nothing but relaxing fun with Uncle Ronnie and Aunt Dottie, we passed a billboard advertising for some restaurant called Pappy T's. We decided this would be a great new nickname for Troy. As some of you know, he has tried for years now to obtain a natural sounding nickname. I think he's secretly felt a little jealous that I have about 27 nicknames. His most recent attempts were Shank and Ol' Paint, but somehow neither of them stuck. So let's give Pappy T's a try, what do you say? He is about to become a Pappy, after all.

coming soon: DADDY! ...by troy

September 3, 2004, 9:00 pm

You know how when a popular movie comes out and everybody's seen it but you and it just so happens that everyone who knows you knows that you're going to just LOVE this movie! And so they tell you every chance they get. "Oh, you're just going to love it!" And you're like, "I know, the previews look great!" but deep down inside you wish they'd change the subject. You really hope they don't give away the ending or ruin it by telling you to watch for a particular scene because it was their favorite. You've been waiting for a very long time for this movie to come out and the preview makes you all teary and you hope it's the best movie you've ever seen EVER. But still you're worried it might not be - lots of things can go wrong in a movie theater. So you smile and hope for the best.

You know how that happens sometimes?

personal question

September 2, 2004, 8:58 am

Yesterday I got hit on while waiting for my D train. This man, who I think was German, came up and began asking me questions that could only mean one thing: he loved me. I tried to position my wedding ring just so, tried to stick my belly out in a rather obvious fashion, but nothing was going to stop his routine. Finally he said, "Can I ask you a personal question? Are you single?" And then I said in the most aggressive voice possible: "I'M MARRIED AND I'M PREGNANT!" No one has ever made those words sound so mean and angry. He looked me up and down, looking for signs of pregnancy I guess, and continued to talk to me as if that information wasn't really relevant. Finally my train arrived and I was able to escape his love.

What can I say? We chubby pregnant women are VERY hot items.
