a year
December 31, 2005, 4:49 pm
We got our beloved digital camera on New Year's Eve 2004, the last uneventful, normal year of our lives. (Except for the being pregnant part.) We traipsed out into the cold weather and wound up downtown somewhere and before we knew it we were the proud owners of a teeny tiny camera that would get a whole lot of attention. To date we've taken over 12,000 photographs. (I'm not exaggerating for comedy's sake!) We then got ourselves back home, me carrying around 25 extra pounds, and once the battery was all charged up we took this charming little picture of us tired parents-to-be, trying desperately to stay up until midnight. I can't remember if we did or not.
Now here we are, 365 days later, reflecting back upon the most incredibly wonderful, magical year of our lives and wondering what this new one will bring. There was no traipsing out to the subway today for us. We've been inside all day playing with trains and blocks and reading books and watching Baby Einstein and eating Cheerios and taking the picture below and laughing over really silly things. I'm feeling a little sad to see 2005 go, because 2005 was the year Huck was born. It was the year I became a mother. It was the year Troy and I became related, if you think about it.
There's a beautiful snow storm going on right now, and every time I look out the window I see Huck's stocking hanging there, and I hear him making little excited squeals behind me as Daddy talks to him in Spanish. I feel happy and tired and overwhelmed at the lovely simplicity of this December 31st. This time last year I could not begin to picture life as I now know it, and I can only imagine how I'll feel a year from today.
Happy 2006 to all of our faithful family and friends. I hope you get a nice dose of contentment, too.[ 4 comments ] ( 47 views )
a sunshiney christmas

Huck's first Christmas was positively spring-like in good old Kansas! He spent a lot of time sitting outside in the grass and going topless inside near the Christmas trees.
He handled the paparrazi of aunts and grandparents with much dignity and charm. Therefore, we have about 3,000 pictures documenting his every move. Here's Aunts Lori and Tina working hard to capture the perfect pose.
And here's a result of their dedication.
Thank you to all of our family for the love and gifts and food and incredible hospitality! Huck has taken a lot of naps since we returned home yesterday. I think you all done wore him out. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Huck Heads everywhere!!! Now time for Mommy to join Huck and take a nap, too.

Although Huck was dressed as Santa this evening at our church's community Christmas party, he was quite uncomfortable with the actual grown-up Santa. Here we are trying to distract him from the fact that he is inches away from this frightening man. Our friend and daddy-to-be Brian took the picture while our friend and mommy-to-be Tiffany ran back and forth in front of us making Huck smile. Sometimes it really does take a village to get a good photograph.

This is Huck's newest thing. He puts his arm out very dramatically towards whatever it is that has caught his interest. Sometimes he points. He always wants to be taken to the object, be it our Christmas tree or a painting or a plant or something else that he can't get to on his own. Sometimes while he points he gets distracted by other things that he wants to point to, and in the midst of all this pointing he will burst out laughing in an exaggerated way. Sometimes he's overcome with happiness. It's sweet.

Today Huck is nine months old! As many people have pointed out, he's been out as long as he was in.We got our Christmas tree and put it on our kitchen table, far from Huck's reach. He likes looking at it and gently touching the ornaments. It almost always makes him say, "Da!" which is his word for all things happy.
I'm very happy to say that Max is doing pretty well with Huck these days, thanks to his fear of wearing a muzzle. He lets Huck touch him and "rewards" him with kisses. The kisses are so grotesque that Huck is the one who ends the lovefest by crawling away with a disgusted look on his face.

Huck has become such a mover and a shaker these days that we can hardly keep up with him. Gone are my days of lying around eating bon-bons while he plays with a soft toy and coos. He's starting to pull himself up to standing on almost everything, including the rocking chair and bathtub. Why do babies love danger so much? Yesterday he pulled himself up and let go for a few seconds balancing on his own. I quickly explained to him all the benefits of not doing that ever again. There is no reason he needs to figure out how to walk for a while. With all this newfound motion he is bumping his head a lot. Almost everyday he has some red mark on his forehead that caused a tremendous outburst of crying. I try to tell him, "If you would just sit in one spot and quit being so talented you wouldn't hurt yourself all day long." Then he laughs, spits, honks and attacks my upper arm with his very slobbery mouth. I have a couple hickies on my arm, as well as a small bruise where he bit me. Why do babies love to bite so much? And why do they think it's funny? What IS funny is that Huck has figured out how to give us zerberts on our bellies. This never fails to cause out of control laughter for everyone involved.
